Lermontov Day

5th November 2014

Tommy Beavitt
In the month of October several celebrations were held across Scotland to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov. The poet was relate to the Scottish Learmonth family, and his family arranged a number of celebrations in both Scotland and Russia.
Russian Edinbirgh joined the celebrations by hosting a poetry event. Our old friend Thomas Beavitt, a virtuoso ballad singer, sang in both Scots and Russian. It wasn't Thomas' first time on the stage at the Russian Education and Support Centre, and, as ever, the concert was a huge success.
He shared the stage with pupils from the Rozochki class, who recited Lermontov's poetry. Some of the spectators showed their enthusiasm by answering the host's questions about Lermontov's biography. The centre's administrator Gulzhan Ibrayeva also performed a song version of Lermontov's The Sail.
